From the end of the last thread…

I don’t know if Pete is lying or if he hasn’t bothered to learn the actual facts in an attempt to deal with the real issue, but this is something a Democratic candidate for POTUS should know about. Whether he’s lying or willfully ignorant, either way, it feels disqualifying.

When can we start saying “Black and White economic anxiety”?

Suicides and overdoses among factors fueling drop in U.S. life expectancy

“The root causes of the problem — which stem from the decline of the working class, the erosion of families, communities and social capital, and an inadequate public healthcare system — these are not going away,” said Brookings Institution scholar Carol Graham, who studies the rise and fall of happiness in societies. “Even worse, those problems are likely to spill over into the next generation.”

Many of those who have died from deaths of despair, or who are traveling that path, will leave behind children stressed from experiences that include general neglect and witnessing their parents’ overdoses.”

Looks like this will be the “expert testimony” stuff I talked about the other day.

Republicans held a similar hearing at the outset of proceedings against President Bill Clinton in 1998, and Democrats say the move is a necessary prerequisite to drafting articles of impeachment.

“The impeachment inquiry is entering into a new phase,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said in a statement. “Our first task is to explore the framework put in place to respond to serious allegations of impeachable misconduct like those against President Trump.”

Most notably, the hearing will give Trump and his legal team the option to participate. The president and his allies have blasted Democrats over their impeachment inquiry, saying it has failed to include meaningful due process for the president.

Nadler is calling one of Trump’s bluffs. Curious to see who Trump can find that would be willing to go before congress and debase themselves

All of these issues can be traced to the ongoing and massive transfer of wealth to the upper classes. They are sucking us dry and literally leaving dead bodies in their wake.

But hey, greatest fucking country in the world, right?

Max Boot: “Republicans have turned their back on conservative principles to become a cult of personality for an aspiring authoritarian. All voters with a conscience should now turn their back on the Republican Party. For aiding and abetting the president’s egregious abuses of power, the Republican Party deserves to be destroyed from top to bottom. We need a center-right party in this country. What we have instead is a party with no fixed principles that is willing to do anything — no matter how vile — to serve its maximum leader, a.k.a. ‘the chosen one.’”

yeah - i wanted the “burn down the gop” part and i didnt want to take out the part i didnt care for - the center-right party nonsense

if you see the threat, then it’s simple:
the way to get trump out is vote D.
even if you dont register D or participate in the primaries.
because there’s not a lot of time
dont need a new party or anything - you couldnt build one that fast anyway

accept how we got here, what the options are, suck it up and goddammit vote D.

you can worry about belonging to a shiny new party later

We could have more/better parties in this country, but the two major parties continue to sell the “if you vote third party, you’re wasting your vote” and people continue to buy it. It probably doesn’t help that third parties often end up being led by crazy people.

Here’s CNN’s exit poll from 2018. Among those who voted for Trump in 2016, 8% voted for Democrats in 2018. If my math is right, it’s about 3-4% of the overall electorate (complicated by the fact that turnout in 2018 was about 10% lower than turnout in 2016). Democrats also won fairly big among those who voted third party or didn’t vote (a total of 16% of the 2018 electorate).

I think for a lot of former Republicans, they had deluded themselves into thinking that the high brow conservative movement was what the party really was. They couldn’t/wouldn’t acknowledge that the movement was not what the Republican base was.

The base got swept up in grievance politics, scared of a rapidly changing world, and bought into their worst instincts which were amplified by the likes of Limbaugh and Hannity and O’Rielly and the rest. Trump is the perfect avatar for the base, and is willing to exploit it to his full advantage.

The movement types would have been fine with someone like Cruz or Rubio or Jeb because they know that those guys would be willing to tell the base to piss off on a few issues. Trump won’t do that because he’s not interested in anything other than lining his otherwise empty pockets, and he knows that he can make more by giving the base the nastiest parts of what they want.

Plus, nationally 4.89% of the national vote went to Johnson/Stein/McMullin, which is historically high for third party votes. By comparison Johnson and Stein combined for just 1.35% in 2012; and Nader and Barr combined for less than 1% in 2008.

Realistically, there’s about 3.5% of voters that would have otherwise voted for a major party nominee in 2016 but for the choices. I suspect a fairly decent amount of them will end up voting for the Democratic nominee; and I can’t imagine a scenario where a significant number of them vote for Trump.

Biggest problem for Bush WRT the economy was he didn’t seem able to project any empathy about it. Then he tried to convince people that they were wrong, and while he was TECHNICALLY correct that the economy was no longer in recession, that wasn’t what people were experiencing.

Clinton came out of the primary because he has always been able to connect with people’s pain, so that they felt heard.

Perot connected more with people’s anger and frustration.

But. you know, he didn’t really have much in the way of policy prescriptions. And when he put together a ‘blue ribbon panel’ of economists to develop his tax/spend policy (because, remember, his big thing was the deficit was gonna kill us), it was so punitive, in the midst of a recession, that we’d have basically fallen off a cliff.

That’s a pretty solid analysis, really.

The parsnips are a deal-breaker but I would totally feed it to my scuzzbag relatives if they dared to show up at my house.

You Can Get A Full-Course Christmas Dinner In One Can

The nine layers include turkey, potatoes, gravy, and Christmas pudding.

The nine-layer meal includes everything you need for a traditional Christmas dinner, including dessert. It starts with scrambled egg and bacon (maybe it’s intended for breakfast?). Then it moves down to two mince pies, turkey and potatoes, gravy, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, Brussel sprouts with stuffing or broccoli with stuffing, roast carrots and parsnips, and, to complete the meal, Christmas pudding.

We should include more people on our currency than just presidents (and Hamilton and Franklin). I’d like to see people who contributed to the nation’s culture and history in positive ways - authors, musicians, artists, scientists/inventors.

The UK does that.

They’ve got Shakespeare, Austen, Newton, Darwin…

Thanksgiving travel is so much fun!

One of the airline catering firms Is planning a sit-in at National Airport in DC today…

Workers to Picket at DCA

Airline catering workers at Reagan National Airport are planning to picket and stage a sit-in today to protest “poverty wages [and] expensive healthcare.”

The workers, who work for companies contracted by the airlines, are paid as little as $12.15 an hour and many don’t receive company-provided healthcare, according to labor union UNITE HERE Local 23.

Around 5:30 p.m. today, on perhaps the busiest travel day of the year, workers are planning to engage in “informational picketing,” followed by a “nonviolent civil disobedience sit-in” at DCA’s American Airlines Terminal C.

There’s a divet in the top of the fretboard there. So, needless to say, it’s going back. The thing that sucks is that if I want another bass by Christmas, I’ll probably have to just shell out more money because the refund on this is presumably gonna take a couple of weeks.

I agree with Boot but does he really believe that the Republican Party is horrible just now? Does he really believe that the problem is Trump? Trump is the symptom of how debased Republicans have become but even after he is out of problem, Republicans are still going to be a racist mess.

It’s a generational thing.

Earl Warren was a Republican. There used to be a whole faction of that kind of Republican. Nixon was a crook, but he’s a crook who did EPA, OSHA, Title IX, Title X. Gerald Ford was the single best-on-women’s-issues of his generation. The first senator to stand up against McCarthy was Margaret Chase Smith, Republican fro Maine.

The Republican Party hasn’t always been what it is today; and it doesn’t have to always be.

Don’t know about the other laws, but EPA and OSHA were pushed through to prevent stronger Dem-backed legislation in the works.

Eh, I think it’s just because in the 20th century we had almost no changes to our currency until the late 90s. And that was such a shock to people that making even bigger changes would have fried too many brains.

I rarely carry cash anymore. But there are times when it’s nice to have some spending money in my pocket. And yet I feel like a system where we don’t have the option of cash would be a nightmare.

I still wonder sometimes, how the last quarter of the 20th century would have played out if Nixon had been smart enough to throw the burglars under the bus from the beginning and skated.

Would Reagan have ended up being president in 1977? Does the economy tank in the late 70s, and who do the Dems run in 80? The last half century could have looked very different.

One thing you keep hearing from the NeverTrump Conservatives is “He was a good guy. He was smart, he was principled” and on and on, “What happened to him?”

And it never occurs to them that the person they are now disappointed with was ALWAYS like that, but had never had the opportunity to really let their Fascist flag fly.

I remember feeling about Perot supporters much the same way I feel now about Trump supporters. To me he seemed like an obvious nutball.

The only things that Perot had in common with Trump are that he was a “billionaire” and an outsider with no political experience. Otherwise, the two men could not differ more in terms of intellect, knowledge, temperament, and behavior. Perot was eccentric but not a dishonest misogynist and racist. He was a real billionaire based on his legitimate business success, and not from money inherited from his father. Yes — his economic philosophy was similar to Trump’s stated views, but Perot would not be engaging in senseless trade wars and would have definitely learned from experience if his policies failed. (I voted for Clinton both times)

So - multiple issues here.

Is this normal operating procedure, or did this get back to Trump outside normal channels? If this is normal operating procedure, he’s still in trouble because the only reason he unfroze the aid was that he knew the WB testimony was going to implicate him in holding up the aid for partisan personal political reasons that had nothing to do with any national policy.

If this isn’t normal operating procedure, it opens up another line of inquiry because who let Trump know that there was a whistleblower and why did they escalate to Trump?

Dude, that sucks. You could almost get away with a ding like that on a Fender or a Gibson, but no way on a Ric.

Good luck with the return. And just a note - Reverb has a Black Friday sale going on already. 15% off on a whole lot of guitars (I’ve been looking. A lot).
